The Consortium's June General Membership Meeting took place on the 29th at Cedars Medical Center. University of Miami Dean Nilda Peragallo, DrPH, RN, FAAN, made a presentation on the school's leading research of Hispanic health disparities and used the event to announce plans for "El Centro" the new National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities at the University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies. Attendees arriving early took a tour of the hospital prior to the Dean's remarks and afterwards enjoyed lunch in an adjacent room where and update on the Consortium's work was provided by President-Elect Silvia Stradi, Board Member Evelyn Gonzalez-Morlote, and Executive Director Ralph Egues. Also during lunch, the Consortium recognized two founding Board Members. In recognizing Pam Hardesty, Chief Nursing Officer of Aventura Hospital and Medical Center, and Jane Mass, Chief Nursing Officer of the Jackson Health System, Consortium President-Elect and Cedars Medical Center Chief Nursing Officer Silvia Stradi remarked, “Today the Consortium is recognized as a leading advocate for the concerns of nursing leaders and the principal entity that brings together nursing practice and academia from throughout the region. With our agenda continuing to evolve and touching every phase of the nursing workforce from high school through retirement, and with our successes attracting the attention of nurse leaders from throughout the state and as far away as Philadelphia, it is important that we honor those who helped lay the foundation for the work that we are doing today.” Both Mass and Hardesty served on the Consortium’s Board of Directors for more than five years and were instrumental in helping to establish many Consortium programs and recruit members. More than six hundred high school students participated in A Day in the Life of a Nurse™, the shadowing program developed by the Nursing Shortage Consortium of South Florida. A total of 25 hospitals and 45 high schools participated this year in Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, and Hendry Counties.
"Each hospital tailors the experience to their unique setting, but generally the day starts with a welcome and a brief overview of what is planned, and the students complete a pre-experience survey that measures their knowledge of and attitudes towards the nursing profession,” explained Claudia Distrito, NSC-SF President. Students then go to various hospital units and get to see what nurses really do. In addition to shadowing nurses, students at some hospitals learned about nursing through thought provoking questions and answer sessions, trivia games, and factoids.
